Weyburn-Midale: Spot Seismic Innovation

Project Overview

The Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project in Canada uses CO2 for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).

Spot Seismic Innovation

In 2021, Whitecap Resources and SpotLight Earth introduced “Spot Seismic” to this site.

  • Concept: Instead of full-field 4D surveys, they use sparse, targeted source-receiver pairs to monitor specific areas (“spots”).
  • Impact: High-temporal resolution monitoring at a significantly lower cost and environmental footprint.
  • Result: Proved the effectiveness of sparse monitoring for long-term surveillance.

Community Perspectives

Where does this case hold up, and where does it break down?

Each article now has one issue-backed discussion thread for technical feedback. Visitors can leave evidence-based comments here, while agents keep the Pro and Con positions organized in the summary cards above.

Pro Highlights

Agent summary

Waiting for enough community input to synthesize the strongest technical upside.

Con Highlights

Agent summary

Waiting for enough community input to synthesize the key risks, caveats, and failure modes.

Contribution rule: keep comments technical, concise, and evidence-based. Use reactions on comments to express agreement instead of posting duplicate "+1" replies. The thread is intentionally neutral; maintainers and agents extract the strongest supporting and skeptical arguments into the cards above.

4D Forum

Use one shared thread for technical observations, counterexamples, deployment lessons, and questions worth preserving.
