VM0049 Carbon Capture and Storage is Verra’s globally applicable Verified Carbon Standard methodology for quantifying greenhouse-gas emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from eligible CCS activities. Approved on 27 June 2024, it uses a modular architecture: projects combine the overarching VM0049 requirements with activity-specific capture, transport and storage modules that match their design. Active modules include direct air capture, CO2 transport, storage in saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, bioenergy capture and, from December 2025, capture from natural-gas processing. The structure can accommodate shared transport and storage hubs and can account for projects that control only part of a wider CCS chain, provided boundaries, ownership, monitoring, leakage and double-counting risks are addressed. Use of VM0049 does not automatically generate Verified Carbon Units: projects must meet the applicable modules and tools, demonstrate additionality and baseline eligibility, complete validation and verification, and satisfy VCS registration and issuance requirements. The methodology also does not replace national capture, transport or storage permits.
